Last school year, students at Stone Ridge and Washington Episcopal School stepped into the world of fashion design through our after-school program, and their creativity was nothing short of inspiring! Over the course of several weeks, young artists learned how to sketch figures, experiment with color theory, and render fabric textures as they imagined and illustrated their own clothing designs. From bold gowns to playful everyday outfits, each drawing reflected the unique style and personality of its creator.
Now, I’m thrilled to bring this class to Glen Echo Park on Saturday mornings! In this four-session program, students will be guided through the basics of fashion illustration while developing confidence in their artistic choices. Each class blends practical skill-building—like proportion, shading, and fabric rendering—with plenty of room for imaginative exploration.
And the best part? In the final session, designers will bring their ideas to life by creating fabric outfits for small mannequins. This hands-on project allows them to see how their drawings translate into wearable forms, connecting illustration to design in a way that feels both exciting and real.
Led by experienced art educators, the atmosphere is supportive, hands-on, and fun, encouraging every student to take creative risks and problem-solve as a true designer would. Whether sketching evening gowns or superhero costumes, students will leave with a portfolio of original designs—and their very own mini outfit on display!
