If you’ve seen my previous posts about my awesome teen camp, the Carousel of Animals Camp, you’ll already know I love papier mâché with kids! At the Deco Arts Camp at Glen Echo Park, where young artists aged 6-12 embark on an awesome week of awesome art camp, we also get to play with papier mâché. Among the many exciting projects we offer, one of the favorites is the papier mâché sculpture. This activity not only encourages artistic expression but also fosters an eco-friendly approach by utilizing recycled materials. From majestic animals to imaginative replicas, our campers have the freedom to create anything they desire, resulting in a delightful array of masterpieces.
On Tuesday afternoon, we dive into the enchanting world of papier mâché. Armed with an assortment of recycled materials like newspaper, cardboard, and random containers or packaging, our campers learn the art of shaping their sculptures. While animals are a popular choice, we don’t restrict their creativity, allowing them to explore beyond the boundaries of the animal kingdom. From mythical creatures to inanimate objects, every idea is encouraged and celebrated!
With their papier mâché sculptures dry and ready, Wednesday morning brings a burst of color to the camp. Armed with paint and a bolstered knowledge of color theory (see our Monday landscape project), our young artists bring life and personality to their creations. Some might choose lifelike colors for their animals, while others might opt for a more whimsical, vibrant approach. This step allows them to personalize their sculptures and let their imaginations run wild.
Thursday is all about the finishing touches! Armed with tape, glue, and a plethora of decorative materials, our campers have the freedom to adorn their sculptures to their hearts’ content. The once plain papier mâché shapes now transform into whimsical, fantastical, and imaginative creations. Some campers might add feathers, glitter, or googly eyes, while others might create intricate designs with colorful scrap paper and tape. This step encourages them to embrace their unique artistic styles and showcase their individuality.
The papier mâché sculpture workshop at Deco Arts Camp not only nurtures creativity but also instills a sense of environmental responsibility. By using recycled materials, our young artists learn the value of sustainability and the beauty of transforming discarded objects into art. This hands-on experience encourages them to think critically about their environmental impact and empowers them to find creative solutions to reduce waste.
The papier mâché sculpture project at the Deco Arts Camp is a delightful experience that brings together artistic expression, environmental consciousness, and boundless imagination. From the initial shaping of recycled materials to the final touches of decoration, our young artists revel in the joy of creating something truly unique and meaningful. As they take home their cherished creations, we hope the memories of this week-long artistic adventure at Glen Echo Park will inspire them to keep making AWESOME ART!
