Mathematical Art: Exploring the Intersection of Art and Math

In a quaint room nestled within Glen Echo Park’s Arcade Building, a group of young artists aged 5-8 gather every Monday from 4:30 to 6 PM for a unique after-school experience – Mathematical Art. Packed with creativity, exploration, and a touch of geometry, this class aims to enhance the understanding and appreciation of both art and math.

Sculpting Colorful Symmetry: Elaborate Color Wheels on Canvas

One of the highlights of our Mathematical Art class has been the creation of elaborate color wheels. Armed with protractors, rulers, and vibrant tempera paints, our young artists embarked on a journey to construct intricate color wheels on real canvas. The combination of mathematical precision and artistic flair resulted in stunning visual representations of color theory. Each stroke of the brush brought not just color but also a deeper understanding of angles, measurements, and the relationship between hues.

Playing with Shapes: Geometric Exploration with Model Magic

In the realm of three-dimensional creativity, our students have been engrossed in playful activities with Model Magic, exploring the geometric names for 3D shapes. From cubes to pyramids, spheres to cylinders, the classroom has become a playground of learning. As tiny hands mold and shape, young minds absorb the mathematical nuances behind each form. This hands-on approach not only makes learning fun but also fosters a concrete understanding of spatial concepts.

Watercolor Wonders: Studying Spheres on Paper

Delving into the world of watercolors, our young artists have been capturing the essence of spheres on paper. Through delicate brushstrokes and a spectrum of colors, they have created mesmerizing watercolor studies that breathe life into the mathematical perfection of spheres. The fluidity of watercolors mirrors the seamless integration of math and art, showcasing the beauty that arises when these two disciplines come together.
