Our Expressive Ink Portraits class this September at Glen Echo Park was nothing short of inspiring. Over three sessions, a group of talented teens (ages 11–15) dove deep into the world of ink and wash portraiture — and the results were breathtaking.
Working with continuous line, blind contour, and tonal wash techniques, students were challenged to let go of perfection and embrace the beauty of expressive mark-making. For many, it was their first time working with contour lines, and they rose to the challenge with confidence and creativity.
As the weeks went on, we watched these young artists push far beyond their comfort zones. They experimented fearlessly, explored emotion through gesture and shadow, and discovered how a single line can carry powerful energy and personality. Each student left the class with a portfolio of striking self portraits that captured not only their likeness, but also feeling — moody, thoughtful, and wonderfully alive.
We are so proud of the hard work, openness, and curiosity each student brought to this class. The Crystal Pool Studio was buzzing with creative energy every Tuesday evening, and we can’t wait to offer this class again soon for another round of expressive, inky exploration!
