This year my 5th-grade artists looked at the work of Louise Nevelson and Betye Saar. Inspired by their work with found objects we started our own collection of bits and bobs. Each student started out with a cardboard base for stability and then we learned all about composition. We played with how we would arrange objects without any glue to start. Then it was time for a hot glue gun safety demo. After that, they began to build!
Once everyone had built their sculptures it was time to spray paint. We went outside with masks and gloves, and work one student at a time on a lined drop cloth. Some students chose to add a second color. The results were gorgeous! I built pedestals for my students out of multiple boxes wrapped in white paper. Then each class visited the display and shared compliments and asked questions. Take a look!
