I recently conducted a unit integrating art and STEM through an exploration of local birds. By combining elements of play, observation, and artistic expression, this unit not only engaged the students but also fostered cross-curricular connections.
To kickstart the unit, we began by making our own binoculars. Using black paper rolls and vibrant washi tape, the students transformed ordinary materials into tools for observation. This playful activity not only captured their imagination but also prepared them for the upcoming bird-watching adventure.
With our binoculars in hand, we transformed into secret agents as we stealthily snuck outside to observe local birds. The element of play heightened their engagement and, interestingly, brought about unexpected silence in the hallways! Students focused intently on spotting and identifying various bird species, fostering a sense of curiosity and wonder.
Returning to the classroom, we compiled a comprehensive list of the birds spotted during our observation sessions. By merging the lists from all three sections, we created a collective reference for our study. To enhance understanding and aid identification, I printed reference photos of the local birds we encountered. The chosen species included Cooper’s Hawks, Finches, Sparrows, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Robins, and Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds—each of them native to Maryland.
Utilizing the printed reference photos, the students embarked on creating their own bird portraits. I encouraged them to simplify the complex forms of the birds by breaking them down into basic shapes. By focusing on circles, triangles, and rectangles, they gained confidence in their drawing skills and successfully captured the essence of each bird.
To infuse an element of creativity and surprise into their bird portraits, the students incorporated secret messages within the background. By cutting the background into various shapes with intersecting lines, they cleverly concealed messages in a playful and artistic manner. This allowed them to express their individuality and create a deeper connection between their artwork and their personal experiences.
With their abstract bird portraits complete, the final step was to infuse vibrant colors using oil pastels. Each shape within the artwork became a canvas for the students to experiment with different colors and blending techniques. This stage allowed for personal expression and showcased the students’ unique artistic choices.
Integrating art and STEM through the exploration of local birds has been a resounding success! By starting with playful binocular creation, engaging in secret agent bird observations, and providing reference photos for drawing, my students not only developed their artistic skills but also fostered a deeper connection with nature and their local environment. The inclusion of secret messages and the use of oil pastels allowed for personal expression and individuality in their artwork, resulting in stunning abstract bird portraits. This cross-curricular initiative showcased the power of combining disciplines and provided an engaging and meaningful learning experience for my students. I am immensely proud of their accomplishments and excited to continue incorporating creativity and exploration into our future endeavors.
