Hi Friends! I want to share the incredible journey my three sections of fourth-grade students embarked upon in the fascinating realm of mask making. Throughout this project, we focused on the crucial aspects of research and form, enabling the students to delve into the rich history and diverse cultural expressions of masks from around the world. It was truly an enlightening and creative experience for all involved!
To ignite their curiosity and provide a solid foundation for their creations, we began by emphasizing the importance of research. I guided my students on the path to finding reliable sources of information by introducing them to reputable museum websites, such as The Met’s website and The National Gallery’s website, along with Google Arts & Culture, which hosts collections from museums around the world. We discussed how museums employ professionals to thoroughly research artifacts, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the information presented.
Inspired by these trustworthy resources, the students eagerly explored various cultures and their mask traditions. They discovered a myriad of masks, each with its own unique story and purpose. From the vibrant and spirited masks of Ghana to the intricately detailed Noh masks of Japan. Students then used their own identities or connections to places to choose their inspirational masks. I asked them to sketch their mask of choice and fill out a worksheet that collected important information about the mask they had chosen. We would reference these later when we wrote our artist statements.
After immersing themselves in the world of masks through research, the students embarked on a creative journey of sketching. Each student carefully selected a mask that inspired them from their research and sketched it, paying close attention to its intricate details and unique characteristics. However, they didn’t stop there. Building upon their initial sketches, they unleashed their imagination and brainstormed innovative ways to make the mask their own. They explored modifications, additions, and personalized touches that would reflect their individual artistic styles and narratives. Through this process, the students discovered their artistic voices and transformed their initial inspirations into masks that carried a piece of their own creative identity. It was awesome how they infused their personal flair into the designs, making each mask a unique and expressive representation of their identity.
Once armed with knowledge and inspiration, our budding artists transitioned to the next phase of their creative process: bringing their mask designs to life. Using pre-made paper mask forms as a starting point, they meticulously crafted the 3D shapes of their masks. Materials such as model magic, cardboard, and paper provided them with the necessary building blocks to sculpt and mold their ideas into tangible forms.
To create a smooth and paintable surface, the students embarked on a papier-mâché adventure. They expertly layered strips of paper, adhering them with glue, over their forms, gradually transforming them into sturdy structures ready for the next artistic steps. The process of papier-mâché allowed the students to experiment with different techniques, honing their skills and developing their masks’ unique textures and details.
With the foundation set, the final stage involved infusing their masks with personality and vibrancy. Armed with acrylic paints, hot glue guns, and an array of random, collected and recycled materials, the students eagerly transformed their blank canvases into captivating works of art. They meticulously painted intricate designs, adding depth and color to their masks, while incorporating various materials to enhance the overall effect.
As their art teacher, it was truly gratifying to witness the growth and creativity displayed by my grade four students throughout their mask-making journey. From the initial research phase, where they discovered the wealth of knowledge offered by reputable museum resources, to the hands-on process of building the 3D forms and breathing life into them through paint and materials, their masks came to life with a story of their own.
This project not only allowed the students to explore and appreciate different cultures but also provided them with invaluable lessons in research, form, and creative expression. Art is a gateway to understanding the world around us, and through projects like mask-making, we can celebrate our diverse cultural heritage while fostering creativity and empathy.
